Rustic Teenage Girl Bedroom
EMILY FOLLOWILL
There's a classic, understated elegance to rustic decor. Often synonymous with farmhouse decor, these rooms are homey and welcoming, with cozy paint colors that make for a cabin-like warmth. The creativity is kicked up a notch in rustic kitchens, where we see unique light fixtures, reclaimed objects, and open shelving galore to display collected-over-time treasures. Rustic bathroom decorating ideas, too, often include vintage-inspired fixtures (think sinks, clawfoot tubs, and faucets).
All of these stunning rustic ideas show up in the bedroom as well, where weathered wood furniture and humble fabrics like grain sack on throw pillows feel right at home against a backdrop of shiplap (be gone, drywall!) and warm hardwood floors.(Every homeowner tackling a reno has their fingers crossed that salvageable wood floors are hiding under that '80s carpet!)
A mostly neutral palette keeps the mood calm in rustic bedrooms, and an overall unfussy sensibility prevails—until it doesn't. There are no hard-and-fast rules. Rustic decorating can go in any direction, from the more primitive to traditional to modern (and in most cases, a combination of these). For example, a clean-lined painted bed mingles with mismatched nightstands. Reclaimed wood ceiling beams and rough, exposed stone walls live happily with soft, traditional floral fabrics. This anything-goes approach is perhaps why rustic decorating is trending—and here to stay for good.

White Done Right
Floor-to-ceiling white could read cold and sterile, but add a sculptural iron bed, an old wooden hamper and narrow antique piece as bedside tables, along with neutral-toned, luxurious linens, and the otherwise primitive space becomes downright soothing.
Fun fact: The folk art canvas above the bed was created by women who were learning how to sew.

Reclaimed Castle
When two Texas homeowners, who both happen to be antiques dealers, built a house from the ground up with reclaimed wood, iron, and tin materials, the result is a one-of-a-kind farmhouse with "washed and worn rustic elegance." In this sizable master suite, secondhand materials, as well as furniture and accessories, take center stage.

Rustic Window Frames
Thick, raw wood window trim brings a rustic warmth to this loft space with crisp, white walls and painted furniture, including a pair of Jenny Lind bed frames and a shared chest. Striped wood blankets, faux bois bolster pillows, and a paint-by-number of an outdoorsy scene lend a camping vibe to the room.

Lakeside Rustic
Wide-set paneled walls painted a crisp white in the master bedroom recall the style often found in old Lake Michigan cottages. Leaving wall-joists exposed was a historic look that originated out of necessity (as an inexpensive way to cover wall seams) that is now favored as an architectural detail.
A wooden four-poster bed with simple lines centered on the wall gives the room symmetry along with matching lamps and a pair of framed silhouettes, while mismatched bedside tables lend a less formal, laid-back vibe.

Coastal Bedroom Rustic Style
In this Martha's Vineyard guest room, a bamboo headboard, jute rug, and blue and green accessories give a nod to the seaside location. Horizontal paneled walls and old ceiling beams get a coat of crisp white for a light and airy feel and offer a nice contrast to the weathered chair and earthy bed materials.

Campy and Cozy
It doesn't get more rustic than walls made from stone quarried on the property, as seen in this circa 1930s farmhouse. Upholstering the ceiling in landscape-grade burlap softens the hard edges while maintaining a rustic, campy feel. Cots outfitted with wool throws and a pair of pillows make for a comfy napping spot.

Modern Rustic
Industrial touches like an antique engineer light repurposed as bedside lighting and a funky Serge Mouille chandelier mix with more rustic pieces like an old wood-framed mirror, framed vintage artwork, and a cowhide rug. A contrasting gray paint highlights the architectural details. Dark windows and door frames bring a modern, sleek touch to the space.

Rustic Warmth
Honey-colored wood floors, furniture (the nightstand and antique pine armoire), and hefty exposed rafters bring a lovely rustic warmth to this otherwise white space. A single bulb light fixture (strung up with thick rope instead of a cord) and an oversize basket pendant bring an extra layer of texture.

Traditional Rustic
Rustic doesn't always mean a muted palette. In this Colorado farmhouse bedroom, a colorful and traditional palette of red, white, and blue rules, from the bedding to the Americana rug. A 19th-century chandelier hangs over a bed with the headboard crafted from a reclaimed church pew. The room is wrapped in rustic shiplap walls painted a crisp, clean white.

Old-Fashioned Rustic
An antique spool bed and side tables, a braided rug layered on wide plank floors, and assorted artwork (including a framed rooster hook rug) are reminiscent of Grandmother's guest room. Stained wood window trim and hardy wide plank hardwood floors create a warm backdrop for the room.

Old-Fashioned Charms
Horizontal V-groove walls left unpainted and a classic blue-and-white patchwork quilt reinforce this home's old-fashioned, rustic charms. The walls are left bare, save for the impressive collection of landscape artwork and photographs.

Neutral Oasis
A simple iron bed frame and soft linens in calming neutral tones bring a refined rusticity to this bedroom. Useful solid wood farm benches ground the space. Framed leaf silhouettes above the bed bring the outside in, and a collection of hand mirrors tied and hung with sweet ribbons reflects natural light from the bare windows.

Salvage Superstar
This creative guesthouse is made almost completely of architectural salvage! Reclaimed beadboard gets a second life after it's sealed with Varathane polyurethane sealant to protect guests from potential lead paint. The wrought-iron bed looks right at home among the repurposed paneled walls, tin ceiling, and windows (yes, the windows too!).

Rustic, Refined
This room is a great example of rustic living at its most sophisticated. Natural-colored grasscloth covers the walls while soft traditional curtains soften the space. Stained wood chests as bedside tables and a pair of rush stools at the foot of the painted four-poster bed offers a harmonious mix of materials and keeps things from going too matchy-matchy.

Floral Oasis
Walls clad in lattice from the hardware store and painted a deep shade of green add architectural interest to typical drywall for a unique bring-the-outside-in approach to decorating. Handmade paper florals provide a feminine touch against the more masculine wall color.

Rustic Signage
There's just something about an old sign that gives a space loads of instant personality. Here, the X-pattern on new, rustic-looking barn doors mimics a vintage railroad crossing sign that hangs over the head as a real statement piece.
