Decorating: How to Dazzle with Contemporary Diamond Designs
Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but they also get along beautifully with homes, their classic shape adding style and vigour to any room

For Houzz, I cover decorating ideas and trends and interview designers and professionals for their insights. My favourite pieces to write, though, are Houzz Tours, as I love exploring and learning about real homes. Call me curious — or nosy!

Marilyn Monroe may have preferred the real thing, but when it comes to interior design, there's no need to visit a jeweller in order to sprinkle a little diamond magic over your home. Forget the gems and instead take the classic diamond shape – technically a rhombus – and explore its versatility. In bold colours, simple, striking diamonds can make real impact, or opt for a looser interpretation of this neat shape and merely reference it on soft furnishings, wallpaper and even furniture. These gorgeous rooms demonstrate the enduring appeal of diamonds. After all, interiors trends come and go, but diamonds are forever…
Rock the glam LA look
This funky wallpaper comprises numerous diamond patterns overlapping and interlocking for a multi-faceted look. Combined with colourful furniture, chic lighting and Slim Aarons photography, it creates an immensely glamorous, LA-inspired look.
Go bold with flamboyant wallpaper
Invest in a classic
Diamonds are a source of inspiration for many interior and furniture designers. This iconic chair was designed by Harry Bertoia in 1952 and is still manufactured by Knoll today.
The overall shape of the chair is diamond-like, and the steel rods that make up its structure crisscross each other to create a mass of individual diamonds, too, for a graphic but beautifully light effect.
Build it in
Make a diamond design part of your home by incorporating it within built-in furniture. Here, a padded headboard is beautifully upholstered in a diamond pattern.
A bespoke design of this size will always make an impact, but the angled lines of the stitching add extra gorgeous detail, bringing energy and contrast to this muted scheme.
Floor them
You can have diamonds on the soles of your shoes, or at least underfoot, with a rug woven in a simple diamond design. It looks striking, graphic and bold, and in this room helps to draw the eye down from the high ceiling to make the space feel more cosy.
Make like a harlequin
Make a statement with a bright and beautiful diamond design. This colourful wallpaper looks both graphic and playful, the colours referencing the bold shades worn by the harlequin figure in Italian commedia dell'arte plays.
Confine the pattern to a feature wall if you are concerned about the dazzling potential of too many diamonds.
Rethink a classic
The wingback chair is a comfortable classic, but it can be brought up to date with zingy upholstery. This vibrant diamond design is hugely eye-catching, slightly masking the conventional shape of these chairs and giving them a sense of energy and fun.
Punctuate a neutral scheme
This modern family living room looks simply sophisticated in muted grey and off white, but the diamond upholstery on the stools brings a welcome flash of pattern. Those stools are more than decorative, though. The tops flip up to reveal storage for toys.
Layer the look
Diamond patterns are hugely versatile and varied, from chunky shapes to more slender designs. This Backgammon wallpaper by Mini Moderns features a series of triangles that, sitting side by side, look like diamonds. The pattern on the rug reinforces the theme and creates a softly coordinated feel.
Go ethnic
Ikat is a dying technique traditionally used in Indonesia to produce a pattern on fabric. Diamonds regularly feature, but with the soft, uneven lines that ikat tends to produce. Introduced in muted colours, ikat can look very sophisticated, adding organic shape and pattern to a space.
